Feeling Guilty When You’ve Not Been Productive?

It is common to feel a sense of guilt when you feel like you haven’t been productive over the course of a day. We are constantly trying to be efficient and keep grinding. However, that is not a sustainable model. We can’t be constantly on our best every day and work at the same pace. On those days, it is natural to feel guilty and go into a downward spiral. The first step to overcoming this guilt is to forgive yourself. To realize that today isn’t a day you’re going to be your most productive self, and that’s okay. Especially amidst the pandemic, your health, mental and physical, matters just as much as your productivity, and being too hard on yourself is just going to continue the unproductive spiral. Another major step is to stop comparing yourself to the work/productivity of others, especially through social media because in most cases, you don’t get to see the full picture and the twisted view that you do get, might make you feel more insecure. Another important thing to realize is that constantly grinding isn’t going to bring out your most productive self. Sometimes the best thing you can do to increase your productivity is to take a break, whether it be in between work or even for a full day. Our last suggestion to you would be to focus on mindful productivity. It encapsulates living in the present, being in touch with your feelings and emotions, staying focused on one thing at a time, and regulating your workflow. Give yourself a much-needed break when need be. A lapse in concentration is your body’s way of telling you to take a break, to take some time out for yourself, and just let yourself be so that you can come back stronger and more determined. While it is natural to feel guilty, the best use of that guilt is to use it as motivation while simultaneously realizing that on some days your best involves taking a day off and thereby, coming back more determined.
